Men represented God
This principle of representing God is shown to a far lesser extent in
men, but non the less the principle is still there. Men have been termed
as ‘god’s in scripture. We read in John that the Jews wanted to stone
Jesus, why?
"We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the
Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be
God." John 10:33
The Jews, as do so many Christians today, misrepresented what Jesus was
saying. Thus Jesus replied:
"Is it not written in your Law, `I have said you
are gods'? If he called them `gods', to whom the word of God came-- and
the Scripture cannot be broken-- what about the one whom the Father set
apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me
of blasphemy because I said, `I am God's Son'? Do not believe me unless
I do what my Father does." John 10:34-36:
So we see Jesus is referring to men being termed as ‘god’s because
they had the word of God given to them. This was for a specific purpose,
if we turn to the Psalm Jesus quotes from we read:
"God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the
"gods": "How long will you defend the unjust and show
partiality to the wicked? ... "I said, `You are "gods";
you are all sons of the Most High.' But you will die like mere men; you
will fall like every other ruler." Psalm 82:1-2; 6-7
So here we see the judges of Israel referred to as ‘god’s and also
as ‘sons of the Most High.’
